Enhancing the heart of our community

The Town is committed to enhancing downtown Okotoks through major infrastructure and streetscape upgrades. These improvements will help create a more welcoming, accessible and connected community, support local businesses and long-term economic growth.

Downtown Improvements Phase 2

The Downtown Improvement Project is transforming the heart of Okotoks into a more welcoming, accessible and vibrant place for residents, businesses and visitors alike. Following the successful completion of Phase 1, Phase 2 begins in spring 2026, with the continuation of upgrades to North Railway Street. This year, the work will occur between Alberta Avenue and McRae Street.

What Phase 2 Includes

Phase 2 focuses on completing the modern streetscape vision and renewing essential infrastructure between Alberta Avenue and McRae Street, with work continuing along North Railway Street and key intersections throughout the downtown.

Improvements include:

  • Underground Infrastructure Renewal
Replacement of aging water and sewer systems that serve the downtown core.

  • Undergrounding Utilities
Overhead power lines and utilities will be moved underground to improve reliability and enhance the streetscape’s aesthetic.

  • Enhanced Streetscape & Public Spaces
Wider, accessible sidewalks, improved street lighting, seating areas and new boulevard trees will make downtown easier and more enjoyable to walk, shop, and spend time in.

  • Upgrades to Triangle Park & Surrounding Areas
Parks and public gathering spaces will be refreshed with new landscaping, pedestrian links and community-focused design features.

  • Improved Pedestrian Crossings & Connections
Intersection upgrades and safer crossings will help connect Main Street, parks and businesses for people of all ages and abilities.

  • New Water Main Installation Underneath the Railway
An important water main installation beneath the railway at Lineham Avenue will be completed to help ensure reliable water service for years to come. While we had hoped to complete this work last construction season, final approval from CPKC came later than expected. Knowing this work was coming in 2026, we planned ahead by holding off on permanent surface finishes in this area, helping us avoid unnecessary rework and keep costs down. The good news is that the Lineham Avenue roundabout will remain functional throughout construction, with the north, east, and west legs staying open to keep traffic moving and maintain access for nearby businesses and residents.

What Impacts to Expect

We recognize that major improvements come with temporary impacts. Phase 2 is being planned to minimize disruption, with clear communication and staging to support businesses, residents and visitors throughout the construction season.

Traffic & Access Changes

  • Temporary road closures and detours, including the planned closure of Lineham Avenue during waterline installation, will be in place at times to safely complete work.
  • Detour routes and traffic control will be clearly signed and phased to maintain connectivity for vehicles and deliveries.
  • Pedestrian access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout, with temporary walkways and coordinated signage.

Business & Event Considerations

  • Local businesses may experience changes to parking and curb access as work moves along the street, and the Town continues to coordinate with business owners to manage timing and access.
  • Some events in downtown areas will be temporarily rescheduled or relocated to accommodate construction activities. Visit the Town's events page for more details: www.okotoks.ca/events

Community Experience

  • Construction activities will include equipment, crews and work zones in the downtown area. Residents and visitors should plan for slower traffic, changed parking patterns and occasional noise as necessary improvements are made.
  • The project team will provide regular updates, timelines and access information via the Construction notices page on the Town website so the community can stay informed.

How You Can Help / What You Can Do

  • Business will remain open during construction and appreciate your support. Show your favourite downtown businesses some love!
  • Residents on the detour route will experience unusually high traffic on their streets. Please be attentive when driving through these areas, watch for pedestrians and drive cautiously.
  • Please be aware of you surroundings and don't walk through the construction site.
