To improve the reliability and efficiency of transit services in Okotoks, we have explored the introduction of a fixed-route system to complement the existing on-demand service. This fixed-route option is designed to reduce wait times, eliminate the need for advance bookings, and better accommodate peak-period demand.

Community feedback played an important role in shaping this proposal. The input provided by residents was shared with Town Council and considered alongside other key factors during their deliberations. This insight helped ensure that the proposed transit enhancements align with what matters most to the people of Okotoks.

Background

In an effort to enhance reliability and efficiency, we are exploring a fixed-route service to complement the existing on-demand transit system. A fixed-route system is designed to reduce wait times, get rid of the need to pre-book rides and accommodate growing demand during our busiest times.

A 2023 feasibility study looked at four years of Okotoks Transit data and identified opportunities for a fixed-route system that would provide more consistent and efficient travel options. By moving around existing transit resources during our busiest times, the Town aims to create a more convenient and accessible transportation system for all residents.

Proposed Route

The proposed route has been designed in a figure-8 shape with transit buses running in opposite directions, making it easy for users to travel to and from destinations efficiently. Stops will be approximately 300m to 500m apart, placed near high traffic destinations, intersections and neighborhoods for maximum access to the community. Two vehicles will be servicing the proposed fixed-route which is planned to operate from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Based on the feasibility study referenced above, these hours and days of the week were identified as our "peak hours," however we are seeking input on these hours of operation in the survey below.

The route map is highlighted below.
