What are volunteer board members saying?
I am a firm believer that the best way to improve the world is to start in your backyard and there is no better way to do that than volunteering for the Town of Okotoks' various boards and committees. I have spent the last year volunteering with the Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) Committee and it has really opened my eyes to the various good things that community organizations are doing across the town to make Okotoks a better place. I have met some great people, dealt with some interesting subjects, and I would recommend this experience to anyone.

Joining the United Way Partnership Committee is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the programs being provided in Okotoks while providing them funds so they can operate their amazing programs. This committee is very rewarding as you can see how programs impact our community. This committee encourages its members to provide ideas and assist in delivering fun fundraising events.

I joined the United Way Okotoks Partnership Committee after reading about open seats in various town committees in the Western Wheel. I had very little knowledge of the United Way or committees in general but I wanted to give something back to my town. I have found The United Way Partnership Committee to be an easy group to be part of. I enjoy the monthly meetings and discussions with the group on fundraising and raising awareness of the charity's impact in Okotoks and area. I especially enjoy listening to eligible local non-profits ideas for the funding raised by our efforts and helping those plan become a reality.

Do you like to hear all sides of an issue, analyze information, and understand procedural processes? Are you someone who is passionate about a fair and equitable process? Then being a member of the ARB may be a good fit! As a member of the board, your role is to attend hearings, receive evidence and arguments from the affected parties, assess the evidence and come to a fair and reasoned decision regarding an appeal from property owners, against the assessment of their property.
About the Board
The Assessment Review Board is an impartial tribunal, made up of citizen members, that hears formal complaints from property owners, against their assessments. This process allows property owners to have a voice regarding concerns about their annual assessment. Board members are required to take provincial training to give them a good understanding of the applicable legislation and how to apply it.
In addition to the legislation, board members must be free from bias or conflict of interest.
Term: minimum 1 year, with possibility of up to 3 years
Hearings: are held annually usually in late spring/early summer. Daytime availability is required.
Sit on a board of your peers to listen to appeals regarding subdivision and development decisions, where you will hear fact-based evidence and apply legal rules to make decisions.
This is well-suited to those with a planning or development background; but anyone is welcome to apply as provincial training is provided for all members.
About the Board
The Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB) is an independent tribunal that hears appeals regarding decisions related to certain land use and development application decisions. The Board's decision is founded on fact-based evidence, applying legal rules as per legislation and planning documents such as the Municipal Development Plan and the Town of Okotoks’ Land Use Bylaw.
The board is independent from the Town and is comprised of five provincially trained citizens from Okotoks. Once appointed, board members must complete training approved by the Minister before they can hear an appeal. Approved refresher training is required every three years.
Term: minimum 1 year, with possibility of up to 3 years
Hearings: within 30 days of receipt of a valid appeal; meetings are in the evening.
